In the modern sports landscape, the influence of a football club extends far beyond the ninety minutes played on the pitch. Historically, football has been a powerful amplifier of emotion, identity, and social behavior. However, this amplification can sometimes carry dark off-field consequences. Research from the UK indicates a 26-38% increase in reported domestic violence following major football matches, corresponding to a win, draw, or loss.
Recognizing this profound societal footprint, forward-thinking clubs are beginning to realize that if football can unintentionally intensify violence, it must also be intentionally leveraged to prevent it. Social responsibility is no longer a secondary, siloed department; it is becoming integrated directly into the commercial and institutional fabric of leading sports organizations.
If football can unintentionally intensify violence, it must also be intentionally leveraged to prevent it.
Standing at the forefront of this shift is Samsunspor. Validating their innovative approach to community intervention, the club was recently awarded the €100,000 grant in the inaugural 2026 EFC x EA SPORTS FC™ “Symbol of Change” program.
Beyond the Pitch: The Evolution of Social Impact in Football
For decades, social impact in football often took the form of symbolic gestures—a dedicated matchday, a temporary arm patch, or a brief awareness campaign. While valuable, these initiatives frequently lacked the structural continuity required to drive systemic change.
Today, the industry is experiencing a paradigm shift. True community impact is now measured by sustainable, embedded interventions. Clubs are utilizing their vast platforms, facilities, and academy structures to address systemic societal issues. By aligning commercial strategies, partnerships, and merchandising with tangible community goals, organizations can create self-sustaining models that benefit both the club’s ecosystem and society at large.

The Purple Jersey: A Measurable Intervention
Violence against women remains one of the most urgent social challenges in Türkiye, such that World Health Organization (WHO) reports 38% of women will experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. In response, Samsunspor launched the “Purple Jersey” project.
The Purple Jersey is not merely a symbolic kit. It represents the club’s formal, institutional commitment to combating violence against women by repositioning football as an active vehicle for prevention. The initiative operates through a structured, multi-pillar model embedded directly within the football club:
- Protect (Psychological Support): The club facilitates confidential, professional psychological services for women survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, aiding in emotional recovery and safe reintegration.
- Empower (Self-Defense & Leadership): To build physical safety skills and resilience, the project delivers open-access self-defense classes to women in the community. To ensure long-term scalability, the club also funds a formal Wushu instructor certification pathway for selected participants.
- Prevent (Academy Education): Recognizing that prevention must start early, Samsunspor has embedded structured gender equality seminars across all of its academy age groups (U10-U19). This curriculum challenges harmful norms and promotes respect and responsible masculinity among young athletes.
- Activate (Grassroots Access): Through “Football 101” clinics, the club expands women’s and girls’ participation in the sport, delivering introductory training in a safe, inclusive environment to build confidence and enhance visibility.

A Blueprint for the Future
Winning the 2026 EFC x EA SPORTS FC “Symbol of Change” grant is a watershed moment for Samsunspor. The funding secures the continuity of a program that has already demonstrated proven results over multiple years.
Guided by a forward-looking commercial and marketing strategy (spearheaded by leadership including CMO Zeycan Rochelle Yıldırım) Samsunspor has successfully fused commercial product development with measurable social equity. The Purple Jersey proves that a club’s merchandise and partnership assets can be mobilized to fund and sustain life-changing community infrastructure.
As Samsunspor prepares to represent this success on an international stage, the Purple Jersey Project serves as a powerful blueprint for the wider football industry. It is a compelling reminder that the true power of a football club lies not just in the trophies it wins, but in the community it protects and empowers.
