OFI Crete’s European Return: A New Chapter

For years, O.F.I. watched Europe from a distance. Now, they are back.

Based in Heraklion, Crete, O.F.I. is one of the island’s most historic and recognizable football clubs, competing in Greece’s top division. The club returns to Europe with a stronger identity and a new opportunity to prove that its continental presence belongs to the present, not only the past. Led by Christos Kontis, O.F.I. is ready to put Crete back on the continental stage.

The club returns to Europe with a stronger identity and a new opportunity to prove that its continental presence belongs to the present, not only the past.

O.F.I. made its first appearance in European competition in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup, today known as the UEFA Europa League, where it was eliminated by Hajduk Split with a 4-1 aggregate score. A year later, O.F.I. progressed past the first round after overcoming Vitosha Sofia (now Levski Sofia), before its journey came to an end against Atalanta.

The club’s most memorable European campaign came in 1993/94 season, when O.F.I. eliminated Atlético Madrid, one of the most historic clubs in Spanish football. The Cretan side continued to make appearances in European competition in the following years, including the 1995/96, 1997/98, 2000/01 and 2007/08 seasons.

After more than a decade away from the European stage, O.F.I. returned in 2020/21. Although that campaign was short-lived, it marked the beginning of a renewed ambition. Now, several years later, the club is once again carrying its name across Europe, this time with the opportunity to write a new chapter in its continental history.

O.F.I. returned to the European stage in the 2026/27 season after securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League, through its Greek Cup triumph. Its campaign began with the play-off round in August. On 20th of August O.F.I. wrote history by winning CSKA Sofia 3-0, as it was the first win of the club in European level after the 2000-2001 season when they have won Napredak 6-0.

The team successfully reached the league phase, and its return became even more significant on 17 September, when O.F.I. opened their league-phase campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Hoffenheim. The result immediately showed that O.F.I. was not simply in Europe to participate, but to compete.

With further matches against clubs such as Rennes, Bayer Leverkusen, Anderlecht and Benfica still to come, the challenge will only become more demanding. However, the opening victory gave the club the strongest possible start and offered an early indication that this European campaign could become one of the most important chapters in O.F.I.’s modern history.

For O.F.I., this European campaign is about more than results. Competing regularly against stronger international opposition can accelerate the club’s development both on and off the pitch. European exposure increases visibility, strengthens the club’s appeal to potential signings and creates opportunities for commercial growth. It also places greater demands on squad depth, preparation and consistency, forcing the team to adapt to a much higher competitive rhythm.
