Our Exclusive Interview with Ivan Piñol Zoroa

How did your football journey begin?

At home football was everywhere, at the age of 4 I was already in the dugout. My father is a coach and since I can remember I have been every weekend in a match, home and away, sunny or rainy day, doesn’t matter, spending my time playing on the street and already lining up my father’s team players for the weekend… Probably my best memories in football come from those times.

In 2009, after my sports science degree ended, while I was still playing, I decided to step away and focus on coaching. I had a clear target and I would do everything to achieve it.

As a youth coach at FC Barcelona, what key philosophies have influenced your coaching style?

In FCB football is everywhere. I have good memories from that time but I always thought I should be more patient.

For me, La Masia is not only the methodology but the essence of the club and their values. It all starts with Johan—he changed everything in Barcelona. I always had huge respect for him.

There are other clubs who have a clear essence and identity, for instance Athletic Club in Lezama. I have visited them several times and it’s insane the football culture there—I was absolutely in shock.

You have coached in many different countries. What inspired you to take such an international coaching path?

Honestly, I trusted my intuition.

Honestly, I trusted my intuition.

I always thought that I should be more patient and find stability as a coach, but opportunities came and I moved forward. I feel grateful to have had the chance to coach in different countries and football cultures. Definitely, some experiences made an impact on me as a coach but also as a person.

You are currently Head Coach at TPS in the Finnish first tier, how has your experience been so far?

Promotion to Veikkausliiga.

It is my first season as a head coach in a senior team. I knew the moment would arrive—I didn’t know how yet, but I knew I would rock it.

Piñol’s first season as a senior head coach brought promotion, goals and a clear footballing identity. His ambition remains focused on continued growth and success.

You have coached in teams in Africa, Asia and Europe. Who were some of your mentors along the way?

Of course I am grateful to everyone who gave me the opportunity, but definitely Simo Valakari has been my mentor and inspiration.

The 2021 season in Finland was a mind-changer—a totally rock and roll season. The way he managed the team, every day was a learning experience for me. I will always be grateful to him—the best coach I have worked with.

What are your thoughts on the Finnish Football system?

Finnish football is taking steps forward fast. There’s huge young talent and more coaches and players are moving to higher-level leagues abroad.

Otto Ruopi, Matias Siltanen, Samuli Miettinen, Tony Mietinen… There is a brilliant generation of youth talent with high ambitions. I am so happy for all of them, I had the opportunity to work with them when they were so young, and they have been taking massive steps.

In my opinion, the Football Federation of Finland has a clear pathway focused on developing youth systems, as well as coaching and education. Veikkausliiga is becoming more competitive every year, and clubs are competing in European group stages.

What are your ambitions for the upcoming seasons?

The target is to compete and make our supporters and families proud of us. TPS is a historical club with high demands—it is an honor and a big responsibility.

We stay humble. It is a challenge that we embrace. We earned our place in the Veikkausliiga because players speak on the field.

We respect everyone, but the focus must always be on ourselves. We created and developed a clear identity on the field last season, and we will be ready at the right time.
